Langverwacht Wines

LANGVERWACHT WINES
Established in 1954, Langverwacht Cellar is situated in Bonnievale on the Stormsvlei road. The cellar, originally named Boesmansrivier Wine Cellar, received its first crop in 1956. The name was changed to Langverwacht, after the farm on which the cellar was built, to avoid confusion with the nearby Boesmansrivier Cheese Factory.
The region’s terroir is exceptional, with warm summer days tempered by a south-eastern ocean breeze that cools the evenings. The vines flourish in diverse soils including sandy, lime-rich, and red clay, resulting in easy-drinking, fruit-driven wines that beautifully express the character of their cultivars.
Today, the cellar processes more than 13,000 tonnes of grapes annually, with white varieties comprising 85% of production. The main white cultivars are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Colombar, whilst the reds include Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Ruby Cabernet. The cellar maintains its position at the forefront of technology, exemplified by the fully automatic red wine fermentation facility built in 2000.
Johan Gerber, the cellar’s fourth winemaker, has been both winemaker and manager for 34 years. His passion for “turning nature into art” has resulted in excellent, prize-winning wines, garnering recognition through Michelangelo and Veritas awards. He was joined in 2005 by assistant winemaker Theunis Botha.
Particularly renowned for its Chardonnay, Colombar and Shiraz—the latter being the flagship wine—Langverwacht maintains a commitment to quality at accessible prices. The cellar’s intimate scale, with just 13 main members, fosters a unique family-like relationship between producers and winemakers.
Visitors are welcome to taste these exceptional wines in our new tasting room, open Monday to Friday. Wines are available for purchase at the cellar and select wine shops in the area.
