Robertson Wine Valley tastes success at Chardonnay Du Monde 2018

By Alet du Toit

Wine producers from the Robertson Wine Valley route kicked off 2018 with astronomical success raking in four of the seven silver medals awarded to South African producers at the 25th annual Chardonnay Du Monde awards.

Bon Courage Estate continues to impress on the international stage by winning a prestigious award at the International Chardonnay du Monde awards in France. The newly released Le Terroir Wooded Chardonnay 2016 received a well-deserved silver medal. This maiden release chardonnay is delicately oak matured and is an excellent example of the perfect balance between citrus and melons graciously sharing space with toasty vanilla flavours.

The Bon Vallon Chardonnay 2017 from De Wetshof Estate, a third-generation wine estate that has been producing wine for over 150 years, also impressed judges at this year’s proceedings. This unwooded chardonnay grows in soils rich in limestone and broken mountain rock and possess a brisk, clean freshness, leading into a varied range of classic flavours including citrus, wild flowers and grilled nuts.

Robertson Winery’s Constitution Road Chardonnay 2016, was selected from premium vineyards and grown in well-weathered, deep Karoo soils, containing generous lime content and matured to perfection for 13 months under the watchful eye of winemaker, Jacques Roux. This chardonnay wowed judges with its interwoven aromas of citrus, buttered toast, marmalade and vanilla.

Finally, a French oak matured, naturally fermented chardonnay from Rietvallei Estate, completed the Robertson Wine Valley’s silver streak. The JMB Chardonnay 2017 is a cuvee, nurtured in site specific vineyards with meticulous care having been applied to all aspects of the vines. This full-bodied wine, offering a complex nose, pairs well with roasted chicken, grilled duck or creamy poultry and fish dishes.

The Robertson Wine Valley is celebrated worldwide for their production of superb chardonnays. One of the main contributing factors that has made chardonnay produced in this Cape Winelands gem so well-known, is the unique and variable soil constructs of the area.
